Introduction to Domains

Introducing

A domain name is the address where visitors find your site. Replacing your built-in appstop.com domain with a custom domain gives your site a professional look, strengthens your brand, and makes it easy for visitors to find you on the web.

There are two ways to use a custom domain for your site: Register domains through NOTIF.cms, or connect domains you purchased elsewhere through domain mapping.

Manage and connect your domains in the Domains panel. In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Domains.

If you purchased a domain from a third-party provider (like GoDaddy, Hover, or 1&1), you can use it with your NOTIF.cms site by following a process called domain mapping. This process requires you to change a few settings in your registrar's account to tell the domain where to point. This guide will walk you through our general domain mapping steps.

If you haven't purchased a custom domain, you can register a new domain name through NOTIF.cms.

Registering a domain through NOTIF.cms gives your website a professional look and avoids the need to register a domain with a third-party provider. We've traditionally offered one free domain with the purchase of an annual NOTIF.cms plan, and now anyone with a paid NOTIF.cms site can register domains for $20 to $70 per year each.

What is domain

A domain is a multifunctional name that is mainly used to give a site an address. For example www.mydomain.com. The domain can also be used to make mailboxes, for example mymail@mydomain.com and to make sub-domains, for example blog.mydomain.com.

A domain is composed of 1) a name eg. “mydomain” and 2) an extension eg. “.com”.

In order for a site to be published online, it needs to have an address. Here, in NOTIF.cms , when a site is published as free site, it receives a “free domain” or URL with the name NOTIF.cms in it. The format of the "free domain" or NOTIF.cms URL is: username.appspot.com.

If you would like to remove the name "appspot" from your domain or use any other domain, you will need to upgrade to a premium plan and purchase a domain name. You can purchase a domain name directly from NOTIF.cms or, if you purchased a domain from another domain host, you can transfer it to NOTIF.cms or connect it to your NOTIF.cms site.

Connecting Your Domain to a Different Site

The format of the free NOTIF.cms site URL is username.appspot.com. If you have bought your site to a Premium Plan and connected your own domain to your site then the site URL will be the domain name you purchased.

You can reassign your domain name to any of the sites within your account. Keep in mind, in order for a site to be assigned a domain name, it needs to have a Premium Plan attached to it. Therefore, if you only have one premium plan, please transfer the premium plan to your new site. Alternatively, you can purchase a second Premium Plan for the new site.
